A Few Examples of Artwork Reproduction

This acrylic painting was approximately 2x3 ft in size. I performed several exposures of the painting with a 4x5 view camera onto negative print film. The exposures were made in a lightly shaded outdoor location, using a few neutral reflectors to even the illumunation. The color temperature of the resulting light was very close to 5500 K, and therefore no filtration was required. After scanning the film and some minor file processing in photoshop, the copy image was ready for printing. I produced several 11x14 matted and framed copies for the customer.

I was given the assignment to faithfully reproduce this Birger Sandzen painting, as the original was going to be sold. Due to the value of the painting I was not comfortable removing it from the customer premises. I took the piece to a covered outdoor patio area, and made several exposures onto 4x5 slide film. The covered area increased the angles of the incoming light, and therefore reduced the glare from the heavy brush strokes characteristic of Sandzen. I therefore did not need to use any polarizers for glare, but due to the relatively blue sky that day and due to the deeper shade, the light falling on the painting was of color temperature nearly 6400 K. A slight color-balancing filter was therefore used to correct for the blue light. The digital image from the scanned film captured great detail, including the tiny cracks in the aging paint. A true sized archival Giclee print was made onto glossy canvas to complete the project.
